Origin of Islamism in South Asia

Why we adopted Desert culture
@Why Iqbal changed from a nationalist to pan Islamist
@ What was the origin of Laat Manat Uzza

Arabs are proud of their own land, language, culture and food. Whenever they made the first inroads to invade the subcontinent under Qasim, they imposed the ‘desert culture’ and ‘ideological orthodoxy’ on the converts of the subcontinent. The Afghans, the Anatolians, the Iranians across Zargos or Mongols accepted the code very well. It met the conditions of their tribalism and secluded traditions. Though luckily Iranian converts until today celebrate their Nauroze. At the time of sunrise Ayatollahs recommend recitation of the following du-a’as on this day:

“O Allah, the new year has begun. You are the eternal master. I ask You to make available to me its good and the benefits which are in it. I seek refuge with You from its evil and the disadvantages which are in it. I request You to let me procure the provisions I need and discharge the activities I take up in this year.”

Ayatollah Khamenei always glorifies the national celebration of Nauroze and calls for enhancing bonds of affection and rejuvenating the surroundings to mark the exquisite, modest and affectionate features of the opening day of the Iranian New Year.

Iranian was definitely a richer culture, so the desert armies were not able to clean the traditions of the nation; they did survive as an acquiescent, obedient culture to the Arab desertism until today. Afghans, Seljuks and Mongols adopted the armies from ‘Najd’ and the desert philosophy as it was very near to their thousand-year-old respective Pukhtunwali like codes. They became the dreaded ‘warriors of Allah’ and subdued Hindustan at will for a thousand years.

The caste system of Hindustan provided ample opportunity and motivation to converts from the lowest caste to become Syeds under Islam. Rich Hindustani culture was discarded and new desert culture was adopted. It is the severity of an ‘engrained/innate inferiority complex’ that we see such hatred of the land and its culture amongst the converts. I sometimes shudder to ask whether a Deobandi Mufti or a Saudi Mufti would recommend for the ‘converts of Hindustan’ to celebrate ‘their’ Diwali like Ayatollahs do in Iran for Nauroze. That may give them some sense of their historical lineage and rekindle much required long lost love amongst the populace.

If Iranians can hold their traditions over Islam, why not the Indian Muslims hold their mores the same way instead of adopting a custom that is alien to them and where the civilization that is being adopted does not recognise them as ‘unadulterated.’ Anyway the ‘Bidat’ we practice to the chagrin of ‘Saudis’ is the Mehndi, the diyas on Eid Milad un nabi, the Halwas on Ashura, the hina, the music and raag, the ‘jeewan jeewan ka saathi’ hindu concept, the tradition of miyoon, the ubtan and the yellows. Taliban want to write this all off as ‘Haram’ (forbidden).

The Vedic origins of Quraysh, i.e., multiple deities like Laat, Manat, Hubal and others, could only be buried by over-emphasising on ‘Allah and Tawheed;’ this issue becoming the key plank of the hardcore converts. Hence the issuance of the ‘carte blanche’ to loot and plunder every temple of the Hindu faithful by the nomad desert Bedouin Vedic-influenced faithful in the name of imposing Allah to its rightful status of Tawheed. It was the encounter of the new deity of Allah against the multiple deities.

The converts of the subcontinent forgot their culture, their mannerism, their riparian cohabitation and pragmatism and adopted the desert mindset. The Monsoon Islam that was more a mix of Akbar’s magnanimity like Deen Ilahi suffered its toll under Aurangzeb’s ideological totalitarianism. The imposition of Arab attitude on the subcontinent frame of mind was reinforced of late with new inroads made by the Wahabbis and Deobandis. We should take pride in our food, in our music, in our culture and our feasts.

The tragedy of this new amalgamation of the new nation Pakistan bursting at seams because of nationalist strains is that we gave up our 5000 year-old authenticated brand name to an acronym that makes no sense. P stands for Punjab and Bengal misses out entirely, though it was the majority provi
It lamentably transformed significantly overnight. Allama Iqbal’s transformation from Tarana-e-Hindi to Tarana-e-Milli is a great indication of converts’ demise as a secular body of faithful; it converted them to what they were not. Envisage and picture what happened to the mind of an ex-pundit convert Iqbal from here, we in Pakistan can’t even recite it because we gave our brand name away:

سارے جہاں سے اچھا ہندوستاں ہماراہم بلبليں ہيں اس کي، يہ گلستاں ہمارا

Saare Jahan Se Achchha hindustaan hamara

(Better than all the world, is our Hindustan [India])

This is one of the lasting nationalistic poems of the Urdu language. Tarana-e-Hindi ‘Saare Jahan Se Achcha’ has remained popular in India for over a century. Mahatma Gandhi sang it over a hundred times when imprisoned at Yerawada Jail in Pune in 1930. Saare Jahan Se Achcha was a sign of Iqbal’s secular mind, the sixth stanza of Saare Jahan Se Achcha is often quoted as proof of Iqbal’s secular outlook:

mażhab nahīñ sikhātā āpas meñ bair rakhnā hindī haiñ ham,

vat̤an hai hindostāñ hamārā

Religion does not teach us to bear ill-will among ourselves

We are of Hind, our homeland is Hindustan.

The song is an elegy to Hindustan’s eminence and exquisiteness as Hindustan mourns its torment. It became a national mantra of confrontation to the British rule in India. Within 6 years in 1910, Iqbal wrote Tarana-e-Milli (Anthem of the Religious Community), which was composed in the same metre and rhyme scheme as Saare Jahan Se Achcha, but which renounced much of the sentiment of the earlier song.

In contrast to Tarana-e-Hind, the first stanza of Tarana-e-Milli in 1910 read exactly a chauvinistic, prejudiced, bigoted ideology. ‘Iqbal, from a kattar (pure) Hindustaani, became an Arab’ which he was not, but the tragedy is that he made hundreds of millions of Indian Muslim converts adopt alien Arab mindedness; they started hating their own origins. When you deny your ‘source’ you become despicable, this bigotry has no philosophical basis, there is no one Islamic nation, there are 56, and intervening internecine wars have been the bloodiest in Islam:

chīn-o-arab hamārā, hindostān hamārā

muslim hain ham, vatan hai sārā jahān hamārā

Central Asia and Arabia are ours, Hindustan is ours

We are Muslims, the whole world is our homeland

Regrettably this transformation from ”Saare Jahan Se Achchha hindustaan hamara” in 1904 to 1910 version “Muslim Hain Hum, Watan Hai Sara Jahan Humara … Khanjar Hilal Ka Hai Qoumi Nishan Humara” encapsulates the root cause of Muslim general decay. We are now facing the descendants of Ahmad Shah Abdali. These Talibans today will exact revenge the way Abdali used to do in Delhi, i.e., from the Muslims.
